What Humility Looks Like…

“But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’” James 4:6

Pride is a struggle in all of our lives. It is a constant battle to die to ourself everyday and live truly changed by God’s grace and love on our life. One of the issues I find is that it is much easier to point out prideful people than it is to point out humble people. I find that it is much easier to know how not to be a prideful person than it is to know how to be a humble person (if that makes any sense to you.) I love this C.S. Lewis piece on humility, it is quite eye-opening and inspiring.

“Pleasure in being praised is not pride…For here the pleasure lies not in what you are but in the fact that you have pleased someone you wanted to please. The trouble begins when you pass from thinking, ‘I have pleased him; all is well,’ to thinking, ‘What a fine person I must be to have done it.’”

“Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be what most people call ‘humble’ nowadays: he will not be a sort of greasy, smarmy person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. Probably all you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him…He will not be thinking about humility: he will not be thinking about himself at all.”

Wow.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself just of yourself less. Humility isn’t about being a pushover or weak. You can have full boldness and authority in Christ but not have your life be the center of the universe.
