Tuned To God…

I’ll be honest, as a Christian, it is not always easy to know or feel that God is around. I know in my head that He is, but I so often want some tangible, crazy “act of God” to happen to know for sure.

But I believe that He is there all the time, involving himself in our lives, situations, and circumstances; it’s just a matter of us being aware and “in-tune” enough to realize all his little blessings to us.

As I think back over the last couple years, its amazing all the “God-things” that have happened to me, and at the time, I was regrettably just unaware. I wasn’t listening closely enough, I wasn’t watching close enough, I wasn’t looking for the blessings.

It’s too easy to go through our week unplugged and too caught up in our own “thing” to be aware of what is truly happening around us. Then come Sunday, we plug back in for church, but that is the extent of our awareness of him.

This past Sunday I was playing at my church Crosspoint. There usually is an early call time so, in order to save myself some time and energy, I packed my guitar and amp in my car on Saturday night. In the morning, before I left my apartment, I did a quick scan of my things to make sure I had everything I needed. Before I walked out the door, I saw a pack of guitar strings of my couch (they have been there for weeks) and decided to bring them with me (I always have extra strings in my guitar cases so this felt a little random to me) and thought nothing of it. When I got to Crosspoint, I began to set up my gear and when I opened up my guitar case, there was a string that had broken while it was inside the case during travel! (still not sure how it happened) I was not pleased at that, but since I brought the pack of strings, I was able to change it out and the rest of morning went on fine. :) But without those strings I would not have been able to play with all 6 strings.

I understand that when reading this you may think, “Big deal, it was a pack of strings…that’s not very big.” Exactly! It was a small thing. But I think we too often miss the little things God does for us everyday.

He isn’t always going to show up as a burning bush or a blinding light. He isn’t always going to speak to us audibly. Most of the time he won’t do any of those things. A lot of times it’s nothing more than a whisper, not a shout.

A nudge, not a shove.

The gentlest breeze, not a hurricane.

If we aren’t staying aware of Him, if we aren’t tuned in…we will miss it.

I think we can experience a much more present and real God if we learn to stay plugged in and become more aware of the things that are happening around us. So take a second and think…

Have you noticed God lately? Where?
